University of Wisconsin

The University of Wisconsin’s International Academic Programs (UW-IAP) department knew that it needed to improve its technology infrastructure if existing staff were going to be able to keep up with the university’s goal of increasing participation by 10% per year indefinitely. The department needed a more efficient web site that enabled students to better serve themselves and transition staff from doing merely administrivia to doing more academic programming.

However, the department staff were unclear about where to start scoping the project, finding technology, and identifying an appropriate web development firm.

UW-IAP turned to Hagen 20/20 to conduct a preliminary technology plan, that included looking at both web site needs as well as Intranet, student tracking, collaboration, and other emerging technologies that could be used for outreach to students (e.g. mobile phones, Facebook/MySpace, email marketing) and for creating student “ePortfolios”. The resulting plan provided UW-IAP with suggestions for phasing its technology investments as well as steps it could take immediately that would not cost it any money.

The project is on-going and is currently focusing specifically on improving student outreach and web site functionality.
